JSON is how applications store settings and exchange data, and it's often minified into one unreadable line. When JSON has to be reviewed by someone outside a code editor, attached to a support ticket or kept as a record, a PDF is easier to handle. JSON to PDF formats the data with consistent indentation and renders it as paginated, monospaced text.
How to use JSON to PDF
- Add the .json file.
- Select Convert to PDF.
- Download the PDF.
- Scroll through the indented output.
Formatting the data
- Parsed and re-indented: If the file is valid JSON, VelloDoc parses it and rewrites it with two-space indentation and one value per line, so nested objects and arrays are easy to follow.
- Unicode stays readable: Unicode text like accented names and non-Latin scripts is shown as readable characters instead of escape codes, and keys keep the order they have in the file.
- Monospaced and wrapped: The result is rendered in a monospaced font, with long lines wrapping to fit the page width.
When the JSON isn't valid
- A syntax error: A file with a syntax error, like a trailing comma or a missing quote, can't be parsed.
- Converted as written instead: Instead of refusing it, VelloDoc converts the text exactly as written, without reformatting, so you still get a readable record.
- Useful for showing a colleague: That also makes the PDF useful for showing a malformed file to a colleague.
- A quick hint: The missing indentation is a quick hint that the JSON didn't parse.
Choosing a format for the reader
- JSON suits nested data.
- For flat records: If the data is really a flat list of records, exporting it as CSV and using CSV to PDF produces a table that non-technical readers find far easier.
- XML and plain logs: XML converts with XML to PDF, and plain logs with TXT to PDF.
- Check before sharing: JSON exports often contain API keys or personal data, so check them before sharing.
- Where to read more: The PDF privacy guide covers safer sharing.
When people use JSON to PDF
API responses for support tickets
Attach a readable API response or error payload to a ticket for colleagues who don't use developer tools.
Configuration audits
Give auditors a paginated, printable copy of application settings to review and sign off.
Data exports for records
Keep a fixed copy of an exported data structure alongside the report it supported.
Limitations to know
JSON to PDF produces indented monospaced text, not tables or charts. Invalid JSON is shown unformatted, very large files create long documents, and the tool requires WeasyPrint on the server. Check exports for secrets before sharing.
JSON to PDF: common questions
Will minified JSON be formatted?
Yes. Valid JSON is re-indented with two spaces per level, however it was originally formatted.
What happens with invalid JSON?
The file is converted exactly as written, without reformatting, so it still produces a readable PDF.
Is there a size limit?
The upload limit applies, which is 80 MB per job on a default VelloDoc server. Very large files produce very long PDFs, so consider converting only the part people need.
Can it show JSON as a table?
No. The output is indented text. For tabular data, convert it to CSV first and use CSV to PDF.
