The most common reason to turn a PDF into Word is to reuse its words: quoting a report, updating an old contract or editing a document whose original file is lost. PDF to Word extracts the text of each page into a DOCX file you can edit, keeping paragraphs and page breaks. It's honest about what it is: a text recovery tool, not a layout converter.

How to use PDF to Word

  1. Add the PDF. If it's a scan, run OCR PDF on it first.
  2. Select Convert to Word.
  3. Download the DOCX and open it in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs.
  4. Reapply headings, tables and images where you need them.

What the DOCX contains

  • A heading from the file name: The document starts with a heading made from the file name.
  • Page text as paragraphs: The text of each PDF page follows as ordinary paragraphs, split wherever the PDF has a blank line between blocks of text, and each PDF page begins on a new page in Word.
  • Clean, editable text: That gives you clean, editable text that's easy to restyle, instead of a fragile imitation of the original layout built from floating text boxes that fall apart as soon as you edit them.

What isn't rebuilt

  • Layout isn't reconstructed: Fonts, colors, columns, tables, images, headers, footers and footnote numbering aren't recreated.
  • Columns and tables: Multi-column pages may come out with columns read one after another, and table cells become lines of text.
  • If it must keep its look: If the document needs to keep looking like the original, adding your changes to the PDF with Add Text to PDF is often more practical.
  • Where to read more: The format guide explains why PDF layouts are hard to convert back into editable documents.

Scanned PDFs need OCR first

  • No text layer, no text: A scan has no text layer, only pictures of text, so converting it directly produces a document with just the heading and empty pages.
  • Run OCR first: Run OCR PDF first to add recognized text, then convert the result.
  • For plain text without Word formatting, PDF to TXT is quicker, and what makes a PDF searchable explains text layers.

When people use PDF to Word

Reusing text from a report

Lift passages, figures and findings into a new document without retyping them from the PDF.

Updating an old contract

Start a revised agreement from the text of a signed PDF when the original Word file is long gone.

Recovering a lost original

Rebuild an editable version of a document that now exists only as a PDF attachment.

Limitations to know

PDF to Word recovers text and paragraph breaks only. Layout, fonts, tables, images, headers and footers aren't rebuilt, and multi-column text may be reordered. Scanned PDFs need OCR first, and the tool requires python-docx on the server.

PDF to Word: common questions

Will my Word document look like the PDF?

No. The text is recovered as editable paragraphs, but layout, fonts, images and tables aren't rebuilt, so expect to reformat it.

Why is my DOCX empty?

The PDF is probably a scan with no text layer. Run OCR PDF first, then convert the result.

Are images included?

No. Use Extract Images to save them separately, then insert them into the document yourself.

Why is this tool unavailable on some servers?

It needs the python-docx package on the server. When it's missing, the tool reports that clearly.
