Splitting turns one long document into several smaller ones. It's the right tool when a single scan holds several unrelated letters, when a report needs to go to different people section by section, or when a portal accepts only one invoice per upload. Describe the parts with page ranges or pick pages on the page grid, and each part is saved as its own PDF.
How to use Split PDF
- Add the PDF you want to split and wait for the page grid to appear.
- To split into sections, type page ranges in the Page ranges box, for example 1-3, 4-9, 10.
- To split out individual pages instead, leave the box empty and select pages on the grid.
- Select Split PDF.
- Download the ZIP. Each range or page is a separate PDF named after the original file.
Ranges or selected pages: which mode to use
The two modes produce different results.
- Page ranges: With page ranges, each range you type becomes one PDF, so 1-3, 4-9 gives two files of three and six pages.
- The page grid: With the page grid, each selected page becomes its own single-page PDF.
- Ranges take priority: If the Page ranges box has a valid range, it takes priority and the grid selection is ignored.
- How numbers are read: A single number like 10 counts as a one-page range. Numbers past the last page are cut back to the end of the document. A backwards range like 9-4 is read as 4-9.
Why the result is a ZIP
- One download is more reliable: A split nearly always produces more than one file, and browsers handle one download far more reliably than a burst of separate ones.

Splitting to meet upload limits
- Portal limits: Some portals reject files above a page count or a size.
- For page limits, work out how many pages fit and type consecutive ranges.
- For size limits: If the limit is in megabytes, compressing may avoid splitting altogether. Try Compress to Target Size first.
- Rejoining the parts: When the parts need to be reunited later, Merge PDF joins them back together in whatever order you choose.

Limitations to know
Split PDF divides a document by page numbers. It can't tell where one letter ends and the next begins, so you need to know the ranges. Bookmarks and document-level properties like title and author aren't recreated in each part.
Split PDF: common questions
How do I split every page into its own PDF?
Leave the Page ranges box empty, choose Select all above the page grid, and process the file. Each page is saved as a separate PDF inside the ZIP. For a long document that means many files, so ranges are usually more convenient.
Can I split a PDF into two halves?
Yes. For a 20-page file, type 1-10, 11-20 in the Page ranges box. The ZIP will contain two PDFs, one for each half.
Does splitting reduce quality?
No. Pages are copied into the new files without being re-rendered, so text, images and vector graphics are exactly as they were.
What if I type a range that doesn't exist?
The part of a range beyond the last page is ignored, and a range that falls entirely outside the document is skipped. If nothing valid remains and no pages are selected, the tool asks you to select pages or enter a range.
